What battery a Jeep takes
Jeeps with Engine Stop-Start (ESS) use an AGM main battery plus a small auxiliary AGM that carries the electronics during restarts. On the Wrangler JL and Gladiator the auxiliary sits under the fuse box beside the main battery, and on the 2011-2021 Grand Cherokee the battery lives under the front passenger seat. An intelligent battery sensor on the negative terminal measures charge and tells the car when stop-start is allowed. Older Wrangler, Liberty and Patriot models use a single battery under the bonnet.
Common Jeep battery sizes
Common Jeep sizes are BCI group 94R (H7, about 80 Ah) and 48 (H6, about 70 Ah), with 49 (H8) on some Grand Cherokee engines. The auxiliary battery is a small AGM of roughly 14 Ah. We confirm size and type from the old battery's label or the VIN, because the Wrangler has changed size between generations.
Jeep battery fitment by model
Typical batteries for the Jeep models we see most in Abu Dhabi. The exact one is confirmed from the label on your old battery or from the VIN before the technician sets off.
| Model | Typical battery | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Jeep Wrangler | H6 or H7 (BCI 48 / 94R), AGM on 2018-on JL | JL models hide a second, auxiliary battery under the fuse box, and we test both. |
| Jeep Grand Cherokee | H7 or H8 (BCI 94R / 49) AGM | Under the front passenger seat on 2011-2021 cars, with jump posts under the bonnet. |
| Jeep Grand Cherokee L | H7 or H8 (BCI 94R / 49) AGM | Start-stop is standard, so the main and auxiliary batteries are both tested. |
| Jeep Cherokee | H6 or H7 (BCI 48 / 94R), AGM with start-stop | 2014-on cars with start-stop carry an auxiliary battery as well as the main one. |
| Jeep Compass | H5 or H6 (BCI 47 / 48) on 2017-on cars, AGM with start-stop | Earlier cars use a different, smaller case that we match from the old label. |
| Jeep Gladiator | H7 (BCI 94R) AGM plus auxiliary | Same two-battery layout as the Wrangler JL. |
| Jeep Renegade | H5 or H6 (BCI 47 / 48), AGM or EFB with start-stop | Fiat-based electrics with a sensor on the negative terminal that must not be bypassed. |

What our technician does differently on a Jeep
- On the Wrangler JL and Gladiator we test main and auxiliary batteries separately, since a weak auxiliary can stop the car starting even with a good main.
- Grand Cherokee batteries under the seat are vented, so we refit the vent tube and set the seat back on its rails properly afterwards.
- Cars that go off-road get the hold-down and terminals checked for looseness and sand, a common cause of flickering electrics after a dune trip.
- The intelligent battery sensor stays connected and we jump from the correct earth point, so it can keep measuring charge.
Signs your Jeep battery is failing
- 'Stop/Start Not Ready, Battery Charging' sits on the display for days instead of minutes.
- 'Stop/Start Unavailable, Service Stop/Start System', which very often traces back to the auxiliary battery.
- 'Battery Saver On' appears and the car begins switching off the heated seats and radio.
- After a night with the fridge, camp lights or winch running, the starter only clicks.
Technician's note on Jeep batteries
If your JL throws start-stop faults, do not let anyone replace only the big battery and send you on your way. The two batteries are linked while the car is parked, so a dying auxiliary slowly drains a new main. Test both, replace what has failed, and keep AGM in both positions.

Jeep owners in Khalifa City
Khalifa City Wranglers tend to live two lives: short hops to Etihad Plaza in the week, then Sweihan, Al Khatim or Liwa at the weekend with lights, a compressor and a fridge plugged in. Have the battery tested before a desert trip, not after the convoy has had to jump you.

Jeep battery questions
Does my Jeep Wrangler really have two batteries?
Yes, if it is a JL from 2018 onwards with stop-start. There is a full-size main battery and a small auxiliary battery under the fuse box next to it. Older JK and TJ Wranglers have one battery.
Where is the battery on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Under the front passenger seat on the 2011-2021 generation. We slide the seat, lift the cover and change it there, then refit the vent tube. Jump starting is done from the posts under the bonnet, so a flat car is no obstacle.
Can I replace my Jeep's AGM battery with an ordinary one?
No, a Jeep with stop-start should stay on AGM. A flooded battery cannot handle the repeated restarts and the car will switch stop-start off, then the battery fails early. On older Jeeps without stop-start a flooded battery is fine.
Does a Jeep need coding after a battery replacement?
No, most Jeeps need no coding. The battery sensor relearns the new battery over the next few drives, and stop-start usually returns within a day or two. We clear stored faults and check charging before we go.
Should I upgrade the battery on my Wrangler for off-road accessories?
A higher-capacity AGM in the standard case size is the sensible upgrade, and it is what we recommend first. For a fridge and winch used with the engine off, a proper dual-battery kit from an accessory workshop is the real answer. Tell us what you run and we will bring the strongest battery that fits the tray.
