Car battery questions, answered

Short, direct answers. If yours is not here, ask on WhatsApp and a technician will reply.

Car will not start

Why does my car make a clicking noise but will not start, even though the lights come on?

The battery is almost always too weak to turn the starter motor. Lights and the screen need only a few amps while the starter needs several hundred, so a tired battery can light the dashboard and still do nothing but click. One heavy click with a healthy battery points to the starter itself, which is why we test before we replace anything.

My car battery is dead at home, what should I do?

Switch everything off, stop turning the key and have the battery tested where the car is parked. Repeated cranking drains the little charge that is left and heats up the starter. Send your location on WhatsApp and a technician comes to the driveway or basement, tests the battery free of charge, then either gives it a jump start or fits a new one on the spot.

How do I open my car doors when the battery is dead?

Use the metal key blade hidden inside the key fob. On most cars the key slot is on the driver's door handle, sometimes under a small plastic cap that prises off. Once you are in, the bonnet release works as normal, and cars with the battery in the boot usually have jump points under the bonnet.

Why does my car battery die overnight?

Either the battery can no longer hold its charge, or something is drawing power while the car is parked. In the UAE a battery older than about two years is the first suspect. After that comes a parasitic drain: a boot light that stays on, a dashcam wired to permanent power, an aftermarket tracker or alarm, or a control unit that never goes to sleep.

Why does my battery die again after a jump start?

A jump start only gets the engine running, it does not repair the battery or fully recharge it. If the car is dead again within a day or two, the battery has usually lost its capacity or the alternator is not charging. Short trips inside Khalifa City put back very little charge. We measure the charging voltage with the engine running to tell the two faults apart.

The battery light came on while I was driving, can I keep going?

Not for long. The battery warning light means the charging system has stopped doing its job, and the cause is usually the alternator or its belt, not the battery. The car is now running on stored charge alone and will cut out when that is gone. Switch off what you do not need, leave the highway for a safe place instead of pressing on along the E10 or E11, and call us.

Battery life and heat

How long does a car battery last in the UAE?

Typically 2 to 3 years, against 4 to 5 in mild climates. Heat speeds up corrosion of the plates and evaporates water from the electrolyte. Cars that sit outdoors in the sun and do mostly short trips land at the lower end of that range.

Can a car battery last 5 years in the UAE?

It can, but it is rare and not something to plan around. The batteries that manage it usually live in a basement or shaded bay, get regular long drives and were the correct specification to begin with. Past year three, have it tested before every summer.

Does parking in a basement or in the shade help the battery last longer?

Yes, it helps. A battery ages more slowly the cooler it stays, and a basement is far kinder than an open bay in the afternoon sun. Shade does not make up for short trips or for a car left unused for weeks, though. Those wear a battery down wherever it is parked.

How often should I change my car battery?

Change it when a test says so, not by the calendar, and in the UAE that usually falls between 2 and 3 years. Have it tested once a year after the second year, ideally before summer. The early signs are slower cranking in the morning, start-stop that no longer cuts in and lights that dim at idle.

Does the AC drain the car battery?

Not while the engine is running. The alternator powers the blower and the rest of the electrics, and on a conventional car the compressor is driven by the engine. With the engine off, the fan and screen run straight from the battery and can flatten a tired one quickly. If you are waiting in the car, keep the engine running.

Service, arrival and areas

How fast can you reach me in Khalifa City?

Usually 20 to 35 minutes inside Khalifa City. The time depends on traffic and on where the nearest technician is, so we give you a realistic estimate on WhatsApp once we have your location pin.

Do you work at night and on public holidays?

Yes, the service runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, public holidays included. Testing, a jump start and a full car battery replacement are all available at 3 in the morning the same as at 3 in the afternoon.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover all of Khalifa City, which many people still call Khalifa City A, and the areas around it: Al Raha Gardens, Al Raha Beach, Masdar City, Yas Island, Shakhbout City and Zayed International Airport. Places further out in Abu Dhabi take longer to reach. Ask on WhatsApp and we will tell you how long.

Can you get into gated compounds and basement car parks?

Yes. For gated communities such as Al Forsan Village, Al Rayyana and Golf Gardens, let security know a technician is on the way or send us the visitor instructions. In a basement the work is done in your bay, and if the service vehicle has to stay in a visitor space the technician carries the battery and tools down. The building and bay number save time.

Can you come to the airport car park?

Yes, Zayed International Airport is about 13 minutes from central Khalifa City. Send the car park, the level and the bay number, and stay with the car if you can. Cars left in long-term parking for weeks are among the most common calls we get from there.

Do I need to be with the car?

Someone with the key has to be there, but it does not have to be you. The technician needs the car unlocked, the bonnet open and the engine started to check the charging once the job is done. A family member or driver is fine.

Battery types and fitment

Which battery fits my car?

The one that matches the original in case size, terminal layout and technology, with at least the same Ah and CCA rating. Send the make, model and year on WhatsApp, or a photo of the label on the old battery. Where a model came with more than one size, we confirm against that label or the VIN before bringing anything.

What is the difference between AGM and EFB?

Both are built for start-stop cars, but AGM is the tougher of the two. An AGM holds its acid in glass-fibre mats and copes with deeper cycling and heavier electrical loads, while an EFB is a reinforced flooded battery for simpler start-stop systems. Replace like for like. An AGM can stand in for an EFB, but an EFB should not replace an AGM.

Can I put a standard battery in a start-stop car?

It will start the car, but it will not last. A standard flooded battery is not built for the number of restarts a start-stop system asks of it, so it wears out early and the start-stop function usually switches itself off. Fit the EFB or AGM type the car came with.

What do Ah and CCA mean on a battery?

Ah is capacity and CCA is starting power. Amp-hours tell you how much charge the battery stores, and cold cranking amps tell you how much current it can deliver to the starter for a short burst. Match the original figures or go slightly above them, never below.

70 Ah vs 80 Ah, can I fit a bigger battery?

Usually yes, provided it fits the tray, has the same terminal layout and is the same technology. A little extra capacity does no harm and the alternator will charge it. On cars with a battery management system the new capacity has to be coded in, and going smaller than the original is never a good idea.

Brands and warranty

Which battery brand is best for UAE weather?

No single brand wins for every car. In this heat the correct size and technology for the vehicle and a recently made battery matter more than the name on the label. Tell us the car and we will suggest two or three suitable options from the brands we stock and explain the difference.

Varta or Bosch, which is better?

For the same size and technology the two are very close. Choose on the right fitment for the car and on how fresh the battery is, not on the badge. If your car left the factory with an AGM battery, an AGM from either brand is the correct choice.

Where are Amaron batteries made?

Amaron batteries are made in India by Amara Raja. The brand grew up in a hot climate, which is part of the reason it is so common in the UAE, particularly on Japanese and Korean cars.

What does the battery warranty cover?

It covers manufacturing defects, meaning a battery that fails a proper test under normal use during the warranty period, which is upto 24 months depending on the battery. It does not cover damage from a faulty alternator, a cracked case, or a battery run flat by lights left on or a car parked for weeks. Keep your invoice.

How does a warranty claim work?

Message us on WhatsApp with your invoice and a technician comes to test the battery and the car's charging system. If the battery has failed and the charging is healthy, it is replaced under the warranty terms. If it is only discharged, we get the car started and tell you what drained it.

What does Upto 24 months warranty mean?

It means the warranty length depends on the battery you choose, and the longest is 24 months. We tell you the exact period for your battery when we quote on WhatsApp, before the technician sets off.

Coding, EVs and hybrids

Does a BMW need battery registration after a battery change?

Yes, on practically every BMW from the mid-2000s onwards. Registration tells the car a new battery has been fitted so it resets its charging strategy, and if the capacity or type changes the car needs coding as well. Skip it and the car keeps charging the new battery as though it were the old worn one, which shortens its life.

What does auxiliary battery malfunction mean on a Mercedes?

It means the small second battery that supports start-stop and some of the electronics is weak or has failed. The car normally still drives, though start-stop may stop working. The part sits in a different place depending on the model, and on some newer cars it is a capacitor module instead of a battery, so we confirm against the exact model before bringing a part.

Does a Tesla have a 12V battery?

Yes, every Tesla has a small low-voltage battery alongside the main pack. It runs the locks, screens and computers and switches the high-voltage battery on. Older cars use a 12V lead-acid battery and newer ones a small lithium unit, so the model year decides the part. When it fails the car may refuse to wake up even with a full main battery.

Can you jump start a hybrid?

Yes, a hybrid's 12V battery can be jump started like any other, normally from the jump terminal under the bonnet shown in the handbook. The high-voltage battery is never touched. Using a hybrid to jump start another car is a different matter, and most manufacturers advise against it.

Is it safe to jump start a modern car?

Yes, when it is done properly. The risk to modern electronics comes from reversed clamps and voltage spikes, not from the jump start itself. Our technicians use a protected jump pack and connect to the car's jump points or earth point, not straight across a battery sensor.

Payment and practical

How can I pay, and do you take Tabby or Tamara?

You can pay by cash, card, Tabby or Tamara. Tabby and Tamara let you split the payment into instalments. We quote the full price on WhatsApp before we set off, so the amount is settled before the technician arrives.

Is fitting included?

Yes, delivery, fitting and removal of the old battery are all included in the quoted price. Nothing is added at the door.

Is mobile battery replacement more expensive than going to a shop?

Not as a rule. The price we quote already includes delivery, fitting and taking the old battery away. With a shop you first have to get a car that will not start to the shop, which usually means a jump start or a tow before the battery change even begins.

What happens to my old battery?

We take it away for recycling. A lead-acid battery contains lead and acid and should never go in household waste, but nearly all of it can be recovered and reused. If you want to keep the old one, tell the technician before he starts.

Does car insurance cover a battery replacement?

Usually not. A battery is treated as a wear item, like tyres and brake pads. Some comprehensive policies include roadside assistance with a jump start, often limited to a number of call-outs a year, so check your policy wording. On a new car the manufacturer's warranty may cover the original battery for a limited period.
