What our technician does differently on a Tesla
- We follow Tesla's power-down sequence before touching the battery, including isolating the high-voltage system where the model calls for it.
- If the car is completely dead, we open the front trunk by feeding 12V to the release terminals behind the tow-eye cover on models that have them.
- The vent hose and hold-down are refitted exactly as found, since the battery sits in a closed area ahead of the cabin.
- After fitting we wait for the car to wake, check that the warning has cleared and confirm the DC-DC converter is charging.
Signs your Tesla battery is failing
- A touchscreen alert says the 12V or low-voltage battery must be replaced soon.
- The door handles do not respond, the app cannot wake the car and the screen inside is black.
- The car will not power up or go into Drive although the main battery had plenty of range.

What battery a Tesla takes
A Tesla's drive battery never starts the car on its own. A low-voltage battery has to wake the computers and close the main contactors first, and after that the car's DC-DC converter keeps the low-voltage battery charged. Earlier cars use a 12V lead-acid battery, AGM on the Model S and Model X, mounted under the front trunk trim near the windscreen. From around late 2021 Tesla moved to a compact 16V lithium-ion battery, and the Cybertruck runs a 48V low-voltage system with no 12V battery at all.

Lead-acid Model 3 and Model Y cars take a compact battery of about 45 Ah in a Japanese B24-style case with a vent port. Older Model S and Model X cars use a small deep-cycle AGM battery of roughly 33 Ah in their own case shape. These are unusual sizes, so we confirm the part from the old label and your build year before we come out.

Technician's note on Tesla batteries
Do not sit on the low-voltage warning. Tesla gives you notice, but once that battery drops out the car is locked and lifeless with a full main pack, and getting in becomes the first job. Never try to jump start another car from a Tesla, and never connect a booster to anything on the high-voltage side.

Is the Tesla 12V battery the same as the main battery?
No, they are separate. The main pack under the floor drives the car, while the small low-voltage battery runs the locks, screens and computers and switches the main pack on. When the small one fails, the car will not wake even with a full charge.
Can you jump start a Tesla?
Not in the usual sense, but we can support the low-voltage battery with an external supply so the car wakes up. Once it is awake the car charges its own low-voltage battery from the main pack. If the battery fails our test, it needs replacing, not another boost.
Can you replace the low-voltage battery on a newer Model Y?
If it has the 16V lithium unit, the replacement comes through Tesla service and we do not fit a substitute. We can still test the system, help you get access to the car and arrange recovery if it cannot be driven. Older cars with the 12V lead-acid battery are replaced on site.
How long does a Tesla 12V battery last in Abu Dhabi?
About 2 to 3 years is common for the lead-acid type in this heat, though some last longer because there is no starter motor to feed. The car normally warns you on the touchscreen before it fails. Replacement batteries we fit carry a warranty of upto 24 months.
