What our technician does differently on a BYD
- We wake a flat 12 volt system with a regulated booster on the correct terminals and never touch the high-voltage side.
- Once the car is in Ready we check its own DC-DC charging, to see if the 12 volt battery is recovering or has failed.
- We establish if the 12 volt battery is lithium or lead-acid before quoting, since the two are not interchangeable.
- Aftermarket dash cams, trackers and lighting kits are checked for standby drain, a frequent cause on nearly new cars.

What battery a BYD takes
Every BYD has a 12 volt battery that powers the locks, the screens and the contactors that connect the big traction pack. On most current models, including the Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Han and the DM-i plug-in hybrids, that 12 volt battery is a compact lithium iron phosphate unit with its own management electronics, not a traditional lead-acid battery. The car tops it up from the high-voltage pack through a DC-DC converter. Older petrol models such as the F3 use an ordinary flooded battery under the bonnet.
Common BYD battery sizes
There is no JIS or DIN shorthand for BYD's lithium 12 volt battery: it is a model-specific part identified by VIN. Older petrol BYDs take small DIN sizes of around 45-60 Ah. We confirm what your car carries from the label and the VIN, and tell you plainly on WhatsApp if it is a part we can supply or one that has to come from the dealer.

Technician's note on BYD batteries
Do not let anyone fit a generic lead-acid battery to a BYD built for a lithium 12 volt unit. The charging profile is different and it will not live long. Often the 12 volt system only needs waking and the car recharges it by itself, but if it goes flat again within days, the unit has failed or something is draining it, and we check which.

Does an electric BYD have a normal car battery?
It has a 12 volt battery, but on most recent models it is a lithium iron phosphate unit, not lead-acid. It runs the locks, screens and control units, and the main pack keeps it charged. Older petrol BYDs have a conventional battery.
Can you jump start a BYD?
Yes, the 12 volt side of a BYD can be jump started or boosted. We use a regulated booster on the proper terminals and stay away from the high-voltage system. Once the car reaches Ready it recharges its own 12 volt battery.
My BYD shows a full charge but will not start. Why?
Almost always because the 12 volt battery is flat. Without it the computers cannot close the contactors that connect the main battery, so the car stays dead. A boost on site usually brings it back, and then we test why it went flat.
Can you replace the 12 volt battery on a BYD Atto 3 at my home?
We can test it and get the car running at your home, and we replace it on site when the correct unit is available. As it is a VIN-specific lithium part, we confirm availability on WhatsApp before setting off. If it has to come from the dealer, we say so.
How long does the 12 volt battery in a BYD last?
Usually longer than a lead-acid battery, though there is no fixed figure. Lithium iron phosphate copes with heat better, but deep discharge from weeks of parking or an accessory drain can still finish it. If it has gone flat more than once, have it tested.
