With the handbrake on and a high gear selected, a healthy clutch stalls the engine and a worn one lets it keep running. The technician runs that test and checks pedal feel and fluid level in your driveway.

At the partner garage the gearbox is removed and the old parts are photographed. If the flywheel is heat-cracked or a dual-mass unit has too much play, you see the pictures before agreeing to anything extra.

The clearest sign is slip: in a high gear the revs rise faster than the speed. A high biting point and a burnt smell on hills back that up. Hard gear selection with a soft pedal usually points to the hydraulics instead, which is a smaller job.
No. The gearbox has to be removed, and that needs a lift, a transmission jack and proper alignment tools. We check the car at your home, then take it to a partner garage and bring it back.
Only if it is damaged. A solid flywheel with light marks can often be resurfaced, while a dual-mass flywheel with excess play or leaking grease has to be replaced. Nobody can tell for certain until the gearbox is off, so we quote it separately and show you photos.
A short, gentle drive is usually possible if it only slips under hard acceleration. If it slips in every gear or the pedal has dropped to the floor, do not drive it. We send a recovery truck in that case.
