Sooner than most handbooks written for cooler countries suggest. Follow the severe-use interval in your service book if it has one, and have the fluid condition checked at each service. Dark fluid with a burnt smell should be dealt with now, not at the next interval.

The usual sign is a shudder at a steady cruise, just as the converter locks up, that goes away when you accelerate or lift off. You may also notice the revs hunting up and down slightly on a level road. Fresh fluid sometimes cures it, and a worn converter needs replacing.
It is more likely the transfer case or its actuator than the main transmission. Transfer case actuators that are never used tend to stick, which is common on 4x4s that spend all year on tarmac. The garage tests the actuator and the transfer case oil before anyone talks about bigger repairs.
